Syracuse Orange men's basketball fans want Gavin Doty to transfer to SU.

The first step for that to happen took place on Wednesday.

On3 Sports' Joe Tipton reported that Doty plans to enter the transfer portal, which doesn't officially open until April 7.

But that's the first legitimate hint that Doty could be available for Syracuse to land.

Speculation about Doty, Siena's best player, began when it looked like Gerry McNamara would move from the Saints to be the Orange's new head coach. Now that the G-Mac move is official, the fervor about Doty has only ramped up.

Doty has essentially already shared what he plans to do next.

After Siena's upset bid fell short against Duke last week, Doty told reporters, "I plan on playing for G-Mac through my whole career."

Doty is also from Fulton, N.Y., which is just 25 miles north of Syracuse's campus.

The 6-foot-5 guard has played a pair of college seasons, meaning McNamara would still have him for multiple campaigns in Syracuse.

Doty averaged 18.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season for the Saints. He shot 45% from the floor and 32% from 3-point range.

McNamara will need to do more on the recruiting trail than just bringing along guys he had with him from Siena, but Doty appears up to the level Syracuse would need him to be.

And he took the first step toward a leap to SU by making his transfer portal intentions clear.
