Cameron Heyward Has Intriguing Comments About Future With Pittsburgh Steelers

Cameron Heyward has long been one of the top players in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ locker room, but as the franchise looks ahead to its next chapter without Mike Tomlin, the veteran star acknowledged that his own future remains something he’ll have to figure out eventually.

Speaking in the aftermath of the season and everything else that’s gone on, Heyward didn’t make it seem like it’s a guarantee that he’ll be playing. Perhaps this is a negotiation tactic or him signaling that his time might be up soon, but the comments weren’t great.
“I’m working on that,” Heyward said when asked about whether he wants to keep playing, per Sportsnet.
For Heyward, the decision apparently isn’t being decided by his contract or roster outlook. Instead, which might be a lie after what we saw last offseason. Again, however, no one knows what he really feels besides himself.
“It’s not that,” he said when asked if it’s about his contract. “It’s more just about where I’m at, and kind of just decompressing after the season. That whole week of Mike T and everything, it kind of threw me for the biggest loop.”
Heyward, a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s defense for a very long time, understands the difficulties of playing better than most. However, there are other factors that need to be considered, including his family and health.
“Fifteen years is 15 years,” Heyward said. “It’s not like I’m a spring chicken, but still trying to craft and still trying to get better. All of these things go into mind. And is it good for my family for me to keep playing?” Heyward added. “They want to see me not just now, but years from now. I got to make sure I take care of my body.”
For the Steelers, Heyward is someone they should want back. I get that he’s getting older, but he’s still very good and an important piece of what Pittsburgh is trying to do as a team.
According to Andrew Gould of Sportsnet, Heyward said he wants to win, which could perhaps have an impact on his decision.
“Earlier in the interview, Heyward said that pursuing his first Super Bowl ring has remained a key motivator to keep playing,” he wrote.
