Why a Big 12 team cancelled the remainder of its gymnastics season

Iowa State has canceled the remainder of its 2026 gymnastics season citing the health and safety of its athletes as its top priority in a statement released today by its athletics department Sunday.
“After a careful and thoughtful review of the program over the last week, it became apparent that we do not have enough student-athletes available to safely compete, and thus have made the painful decision to cancel the remainder of our gymnastics season,” senior associate athletics director for student services Shamaree Brown said.

“The health, safety and overall welfare of our student-athletes is paramount, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are able to safely train and compete at the highest level.”
The Cyclones’ decision comes three days after they canceled their conference meet against West Virginia because they did not have enough gymnasts to safely field a team.
That decision gave no indication of the situation being more than one forfeit, as the team’s schedule listed the next meet for the Cyclones on Feb. 13.
Iowa State is coached by Ashley Miles Greig — who was a four-time NCAA champion at Alabama — and has 18 athletes listed on its current roster.
Prior to the cancellation, the Cyclones were 2-8 overall and winless in the Big 12. They had three remaining conference and two additional meets scheduled before the postseason was to begin.
The team had a season-high score of 193.425 on Jan. 10, but had fallen under the 193.000 mark since.
Utah has already traveled to and defeated Iowa State, while BYU was set to host the Cyclones on March 6.
