Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Campaigns In Assam, Kerala, Pitches Double-Engine Growth Model

Mumbai: With the election bugle sounded in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal and Assam, political activity across key states has intensified, with campaigning reaching its peak. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken an active role in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign, touring Assam and Kerala while expressing strong confidence in the party’s prospects.

Addressing a rally in Dibrugarh, Assam, Fadnavis emphasised the concept of a “double-engine” government—where the same party governs both the state and the Centre—as a catalyst for rapid development. He praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his leadership, particularly highlighting efforts to curb infiltration and protect the land rights of indigenous communities.

“The double-engine government is the guarantee of development that reaches every doorstep. Under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam is witnessing unprecedented progress,” Fadnavis said.

The Maharashtra CM also campaigned extensively in Kerala, where the BJP is making an aggressive push to secure power for the first time. The party has deployed as many as 87 senior leaders from Maharashtra to campaign in the state, reflecting its high-stakes strategy. Notably, several leaders were seen campaigning in traditional Kerala attire, signalling efforts to connect with local voters.

Kerala, which goes to polls in a single phase on April 9 for its 140-member Assembly, has historically witnessed a bipolar contest between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). A third party has never formed the government in the state, making the BJP’s ambitions particularly significant. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4.

During rallies in Varkala, Attingal and Tripunithura, Fadnavis expressed confidence that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would soon form the government in Kerala. He said the state was ready for a political shift and that the NDA would focus on development, infrastructure and cultural preservation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Highlighting the party’s growth, Fadnavis noted that the BJP has expanded its grassroots presence, now having an MP, a mayor, multiple municipal leaders and over 600 corporators. He also outlined key development promises, including an industrial corridor between Bengaluru and Kochi and solutions to drinking water shortages.

BJP national secretary Vinod Tawde, who is in charge of Kerala, is spearheading the campaign strategy.
