Latest draft intel could have major impact on Commanders' plans

There has been a lot of smoke surrounding the Washington Commanders and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Not only is Love the top running back prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft class, he's arguably the best overall player in the class.

Numerous mock drafts have Love going fourth overall (Tennessee Titans), fifth overall (New York Giants), or seventh overall (Commanders). Almost no one has Love falling past Washington.

Some of the top draft analysts believe Love would be a perfect fit for the Commanders behind quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, there's a good chance that Love doesn't make it out of the top five.

In their latest draft buzz for ESPN, draft analysts Jordan Reid, Field Yates, and Matt Miller discussed Love and whether the Titans will pick him at No. 4. Here's what Miller shared.

Yes, they could and should take Love at No. 4. The Titans were aggressive enough in free agency to enter the draft without a must-pick position here. Love is the type of transcendent prospect who the Titans can build their offense around, giving quarterback Cam Ward a viable threat in the run and pass game. And from what I've heard, if Love falls past Tennessee, the Giants will likely take him at No. 5.

Notice that last sentence, if Tennessee doesn't pick Love, the Giants will. That could impact Washington's plans at No. 7.

It could also lead the Commanders to fill a more urgent offensive need: wide receiver. There's also the chance that Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate could go to the Cleveland Browns at No. 6 overall.

Is Washington really that interested in Love? There's a debate about premium positions vs. non-premium positions. Running back is not considered a premium position, but neither is safety (Caleb Downs) and off-ball linebacker (Sonny Styles), where two of the draft's other top players are also options for the Commanders. Picking the best player is easy for Washington this year with several holes to fill. The good news is that GM Adam Peters filled many of the Commanders' needs in free agency, ensuring that he wouldn't need to force the pick at No. 7 overall.

Washington's reported interest in Love could be smoke. It's draft season, after all. The same could be said for the Titans and Giants, who would like to see other teams move up.

Even if Love lands in the top five, the Commanders are in an excellent position to land an outstanding player who can make an immediate impact.
