The 2026 NFL regular season will kick off on Wednesday, September 9 in Seattle, a departure from the customary Thursday night opener, the league said on Wednesday.
Following that, the San Francisco 49ers will face the Los Angeles Rams in the first-ever regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia, with kickoff set at 8:35 p.m. ET on Thursday, September 10 (Friday, 10:35 a.m. local time).
The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks will host the season opener, with their Week 1 opponent to be announced when the full schedule is released later this spring.
The 2026 season will feature a record nine international games across four continents, expanding the league's global footprint. New markets include Melbourne, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, which join returning international host cities London, Madrid, Mexico City and Munich.
Notably, games will be held at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro and the Stade de France in Paris for the first time.
Mahomes posts video of recovery progress
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted a video of himself throwing a football during a workout on Wednesday, approximately three months removed from surgery to repair THE ACL and LCL in his left knee.
Wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg, Mahomes performed a dropback and planted his right foot before throwing the ball while at an indoor facility during the short clip on his Instagram account.
"Day by Day!" Mahomes wrote his Instagram story. "Felt Great being able to throw the ball around today!"
Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Kansas City's 16-13 setback to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14. The Chiefs went on to finish 6-11, ending the season on a six-game losing streak, including three without Mahomes.
Mahomes underwent surgery in Dallas the day after his injury and began rehab four days later.
The three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time league MVP is targeting a return for the start of the NFL season, which will begin on Sept. 9.
Mahomes, 30, finished the 2025 season with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions along with a career-high 422 rushing yards and five scores in 14 games. The ligament tear is the first major injury of his NFL career.
Report: Las Vegas to host Super Bowl
Las Vegas is expected to be selected by NFL owners as the host city for Super Bowl LXIII after the 2028 season, ESPN reported on Wednesday.
The voting will take place during next week's annual league meeting in Phoenix.
Per ESPN, one source said the Super Bowl's return to Allegiant Stadium is a "matter of formality."
Las Vegas, the home of the Raiders, served as the host of Super Bowl LVIII in February 2024. The Kansas City Chiefs recorded a 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in that game.
Super Bowl LXI will be played next February at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif, while Super Bowl LXII will return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in February 2028.
