Some of the area's best powerlifters came back from state with some hardware, while other stars shined on the diamond last week, making for a stellar group of finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week each week.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced thereafter.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Saturday and can be submitted through email at [email protected].

Please include statistics from the week's games and any pertinent information or honors.

This Week's Finalists

• Carson Allen, Canyon baseball — Allen had a lead-off home run and a triple, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs in a win against Dumas.

• Ga'Quorie Chatham, Dimmitt baseball — Chatham hit two home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a grand slam, in a district game against Idalou.

• Myla Gonzales, West Plains girls powerlifting — Gonzales finished second in 105 in the unequipped division at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet in Edinburg with a total weight of 585 lbs.

• Sophia Hernandez, Amarillo High girls soccer — Hernandez scored three goals in a 7-0 playoff win against Abilene High.

• Mason Lankford, Gruver boys track & field — Lankford won the 300 hurdles, finished second in the long jump, third in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the high jump while helping the Greyhounds 1,600-meter relay capture gold at the Spearman Lynx Relays.

• Wade McConnell, Bushland baseball — McConnell netted nine RBIs in two wins for the Falcons, going 5-for-8 with four doubles and one home run on the week.

• Adamari Morales, Hart girls powerlifting — Morales captured the state championship at 123 in Class 1A/2A at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet in Edinburg with a total weight of 890 lbs.

• Khylee Whalen, Dumas girls powerlifting — Whalen finished second in 242s in Class 4A Division I with a total of 985 lbs at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet in Edinburg.
