The Patriots reportedly engaged in trade talks with the Eagles for Brown, but did not want to give up a first-round pick for the Super Bowl-winning receiver. There are reports that the Eagles will revisit trading Brown after June 1, when the cap implications for trading him change. Until then, rumors of Brown being dealt to the Patriots will continue to swirl.
The Eagles are reportedly signing a receiver, adding to rumors that they are going to trade Brown. The Eagles are reportedly signing Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to a one-year deal worth up to $6.5 million. Brown is not a superstar, but he does provide the Eagles with depth if they deal away their Pro Bowl receiver.
From now until the start of the season, every move the Eagles make will be overanalyzed in the context of what they plan on doing with Brown.
June 1 is the date to keep an eye on for Patriots fans wanting to see Brown playing for their team. A post-June 1 trade would leave the Eagles with a $7 million cap hit charge, as opposed to $20 million if they traded him before that date, per Hartwell. According to Spotrac, a pre-June 1 trade would leave the Eagles with a $43.5 million dead cap hit. A post-June 1 trade would leave them with a $16 million dead cap hit for this season and a $27 million dead cap hit next season.
Marquise Brown does not figure to be a huge difference-maker right now. He had 49 catches for 587 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. However, the move does become more important if the Eagles go through with trading away one of their best players. Perhaps they are preparing for the inevitable with this signing.
