Buccaneers Restructure Goedeke's Pact for Cap Flexibility

· Yahoo Sports

Championship runs rarely begin in September. They start months earlier as front offices begin shaping their rosters. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that process is already well underway.

Spotrac.com reported Monday the Buccaneers have re-written offensive lineman Luke Goedeke's contract slightly by moving some money around.

His $20 million roster bonus has been converted into a signing bonus. By doing so, roughly $15.2 million in cap space has been cleared.

The NFL recently announced a record-breaking $301.2 million salary cap for the 2026 regular season. While the increase offers some relief, it does not completely solve Tampa Bay’s salary-cap woes. However, reworking Goedeke's deal certainly helps in that regard.

Buccaneers Create More Cap Flexibility

As recently as this past weekend, the Buccaneers reportedly had less than $2 million in available cap space. That meant general manager Jason Licht would need to get creative if he hoped to maintain flexibility while continuing to improve the roster.

Moves like this don’t change the total value of a player’s contract, but they can dramatically improve a team’s short-term salary-cap outlook. For Tampa Bay, the adjustment gives the front office additional breathing room to navigate the rest of the offseason, including the April NFL Draft.

Goedeke was the 57th player taken in the 2022 draft. He had closed his college career by earning first-team All-MAC honors in 2021.

Since arriving in Tampa, he has developed into a reliable presence, when healthy, along the offensive line. He has played in 52 regular-season games, starting 49, and started all four of the postseason games he has appeared in. However, there are some durability concerns as he hasn't played a full season since 2023.

Still, when Goedeke is on the field, he's as good as they come. He has shown an ability to hold his own against elite pass rushers as has helped stabilize the offensive front. His unselfishness has translated from the field to assisting the front office, but for Licht and Co., the job is far from finished.

An already talented roster still needs a few more veteran pieces added to its puzzle. Several needs remain, particularly at edge rusher, linebacker, and cornerback.

The good news for the Buccaneers is that the foundation of their roster remains strong. By restructuring Goedeke’s deal and creating valuable cap flexibility, Tampa Bay has positioned itself to keep building rather than standing pat. ㅤ
