The New York Yankees had a relatively quiet offseason, with their biggest move being the signing of priority target Cody Bellinger.

“Cody Bellinger's deal with the New York Yankees is for five years and $162.5 million, sources tell ESPN. There are opt-outs after the second and third season—which get pushed back a year in the event of a work stoppage that kills the 2027 season—a $20 million signing bonus, and a full no-trade clause,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone is known for his “whatever it takes to win” mentality. He demonstrated that in October when he benched Jazz Chisholm.
“There was never a problem between me and Aaron Boone. He's been my manager all year and I've stood behind him all year. We always have disagreements—I mean, I played third base this year and we had a little bit of a disagreement in that—but at the end of the day, I always stand with Boonie because he understands where I come from. He knows I'm a passionate player and he knows I wear my feelings on my sleeve. He knows that I'm here to compete,” Chisholm told the media.
The Yankees could be on the verge of parting ways with Boone if the team falls short of expectations in 2026. A potential replacement is currently Team Italy manager Francisco Cervelli.
“With just a single pennant through his first eight seasons, Aaron Boone might have the greatest job security of any active MLB manager. At least Joe Girardi won his lone pennant in his second season leading the Yankees, and he topped that off with a 2009 World Series victory. That alone likely kept him as the Yankees’ skipper until his departure following the 2017 season. Cervelli, a former Yankees prospect who played for the team from 2008 through 2013, aligns with the criteria the Yankees might prioritize if they move on from Boone. Boone and Girardi both played for the Yankees, with the latter serving as an assistant coach under Joe Torre after retiring. Cervelli has gotten his feet wet at the WBC, and he’s shown that he can handle the pressure,” FanSided’s Jake Elman wrote.
The Yankees have the roster to potentially make a deep postseason run, just like they do every year. However, the pressure in 2026 feels even greater, especially after reaching the World Series in 2024.
While Cervelli has no MLB managerial experience, his success in the WBC makes him an attractive candidate. If Boone’s time as manager eventually comes to an end, Cervelli is certainly making a strong case to be the next in line.
