Daniil Medvedev makes honest admission after semifinal win over Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells

· Yahoo Sports

Daniil Medvedev played arguably the best match of his career in the Indian Wells semifinals against World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. He dominated from start to finish, giving Alcaraz a taste of his own medicine by running him in the intense heat, and walked away with a straight set win.

After being trapped in Dubai following his Dubai Open victory at the onset of the US and Israel war against Iran, fans were not even sure Medvedev would be able to make it to the tournament.

Some fans were upset with the hindrance call he benefitted from in his quarterfinal match over 2025 Indian Wells champion Jack Draper. He shook that off in typical Medvedev manner and has also handled the questions about the level of the players of his generation with candor.

What Daniil Medvedev said

When asked about the level of his generation, those in their late 20s and early 30s, Medvedev admitted this group, sandwiched between the greatness of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal and Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, is not as good as the groups before or after them.

He also said that he has to prepare himself to be as competitive as possible. However, Medvedev understands that he may lose more matches than he wins against Alcaraz.

Medvedev shared that his mindset at this stage in his career is to take one match at a time. He is not thinking about legacy or history or anything else outside of what happens between the lines on the court.

Medvedev vs. Sinner head-to-head

The Indian Wells final between Medvedev and Sinner will be their 16th career meeting dating back to 2020. Sinner has the head-to-head edge at 8-7.

Medvedev won six straight matches from 2020 to 2023. Jannik Sinner won the next five from 2023 to 2024 before Daniil Medvedev, known as a hardcourt specialist, defeated him on the Wimbledon grass in 2024. Since that time, Sinner won three straight including the most recent at the Nitto ATP Finals last fall during round robin play.

Sinner is the favorite. However, Alcaraz accurately said after his loss to Medvedev, he has never seen him play at that level. Medvedev will need to bring that same level to defeat Sinner.

Neither Medvedev nor Sinner has ever won the Indian Wells title. A new champion will be crowned as a result of the final slated to begin at 5 PM EDT. Watch the Indian Wells men’s final on the Tennis Channel.
