The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the more surprising teams this NBA season, emerging as the current No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 48-18 record.

Even without Victor Wembanyama on Thursday, the Spurs fought hard against the Denver Nuggets, but their five-game win streak came to a close in a 136-131 defeat.

Wembanyama, 22, was close to suiting up for the matchup, but would be ruled out for the first time since Jan. 30 while he continues to recover from ankle soreness.

Mitch Johnson provides Victor Wembanyama update

"It was a close call because there was a chance he could play," Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson mentioned after their loss to the Nuggets on Thursday.

The Head Coach of the Year candidate also mentioned that he expects Victor Wembanyama to be ready to play in Saturday's matchup against the Charlotte Hornets.

"I do, but that doesn't mean he will (play). Johnson said. "It's going to be a wait-and-see thing. But yeah, he was pretty close to playing tonight."

Before missing Thursday's game, Wembanyama played in a career-high 30 straight games. He's missed time earlier this season after suffering a calf strain.

Through 51 games this season, Victor Wembanyama averages 24.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 36 percent from three.
