After playing a dominating first period, the Carolina Hurricanes let their “foot off the gas” and allowed the St. Louis Blues to crawl back into the game and eventually win by a score of 3-1, on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.

Even as they outshot the opposition 13-2 and out-chanced them, the home team could only muster one goal in that opening period.

That goal was courtesy of a beautiful move and shot by Mark Jankowski. It was the fourth line center’s seventh goal of the season.

While the Canes knocked on the door a few more times, that would be the only time they could light the lamp. In the meantime, the visitors were trying to build a game.

The Blues tied the score 3:53 into the second period and then eventually took the lead 2-1, with less than five minutes in the game.

Carolina’s “shut down line” was on the ice for both goals. Jordan Staal finished with a -3 for the game.

The visitors scored into an empty net with less than a minute remaining.

The Hurricanes outshot the Blues 32-17 for the game. Brandon Bussi took the loss and allowed two goals on 16 shots.

The good news? All in all, this was a pretty meaningless game as both Pittsburgh and Buffalo lost as well.

The Canes have had great recent success at home. According to Walt Ruff, this was their first regulation loss at home in 68 days.
