The New England Patriots are expected to be players in the wide receiver market after deciding to release Stefon Diggs when the new league year starts.

There are plenty of players the Patriots could target in free agency or through trade, but according to NFL insider Tony Pauline, they may have their sights set on Alec Pierce of the Indianapolis Colts.

"I reported just before the Combine that the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans are two teams ready to make a bid for Pierce," Pauline wrote on Thursday. "In the past few hours, I also learned the New England Patriots are hot for Pierce and are expected to make a big push for the wideout. This makes sense for them."

Unfortunately for the Patriots, there are plenty of teams that need wide receivers, and Pierce will be atop most of their lists. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport predicted Pierce would sign a three-year, $79 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

"The San Francisco 49ers check every box on Pierce's wish list," Davenport wrote on Saturday. "The Niners are one of the most stable teams in the league. The team has an established starting quarterback in Brock Purdy. And the 49ers also just so happen to have both a glaring need at wide receiver and $37.5 million in cap space with which to address that need."

Pierce is coming off the best season of his career, posting 1,000 yards despite playing with multiple quarterbacks. The 49ers have some uncertainty at wide receiver with Jauan Jennings in free agency and Brandon Aiyuk's time with the team seemingly over. They may be one of the few teams more desperate to sign Pierce than the Patriots.
