English has led the Friars for the past three seasons but the program has struggled to regain the consistency it enjoyed before his arrival. “I’m deaf to outside noise,” English said last month. “I don’t hear anything that’s going on — the BS outside or whatever people say. But I know they do."
English compiled a 42-49 overall record and went 20-35 against Big East opponents. Providence did not reach the NCAA Tournament during his tenure, though the team appeared in the NIT during his first season and lost in the opening round.
English arrived in Providence after a two-year stint as head coach at George Mason. Before he took over, the Friars had reached the NCAA Tournament in seven of the previous 10 seasons under former coach Ed Cooley, including back-to-back appearances prior to the coaching change.
