Raiders retain underrated edge rusher with free agent tender

· Yahoo Sports

Before free agency can begin, the Raiders need to take care of their own business. One of those tasks is to decide whether to tender their own free agents. They have three exclusive rights free agents (ERFA) currently and Thursday they locked up a couple of them on tenders -- edge rusher Charles Snowden and center Will Putnam.

Snowden in particular has been a sneaky good find for the Raiders the past couple seasons and could, potentially, be even better in the 3-4 defense the team intends to run under new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Snowden had three sacks last season for the Raiders despite seeing less than 30% of the team's snaps. He had seven QB hits the previous season along with 39 tackles after the team lost Malcolm Koonce to injury. Last season Snowden seemed to look better when he was on the field than Koonce, but still couldn't get the playing time to match it.

Now the team appears poised to allow Koonce to hit the free agent market while retaining Snowden as one of the few potential contributors in the pass rush. That group would get thinned out even more should the team trade Maxx Crosby as reports are suggesting they very well could.
