Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Georg Koch has died of pancreatic cancer, a spokesman of his ex-club Fortuna Dusseldorf confirmed to dpa, citing his family. Koch was 54.

"Fortuna bids farewell to Georg Koch with great sadness and will always honour his memory. The sympathy and condolences of everyone at Fortuna go out to his family, friends and all those who knew and appreciated Georg Koch," the club said on Wednesday.

Koch played 213 Bundesliga matches and 165 in the second division for clubs that apart from Dusseldorf included Kaiserslautern, MSV Duisburg and PSV Eindhoven.

He last worked as goalkeeper coach at third division Victoria Cologne in 2022-23. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 during a routine check-up and went public with the illness the following year.
