The Los Angeles Rams got some great news shortly before the Super Bowl, as Matthew Stafford officially announced his plan to return for one more season.

While a new contract has to be worked out, there's little reason for the Rams, who plan to go all-in this offseason, not to give Stafford a raise after an MVP season. But the Rams do need to make another quarterback move, as Stafford might retire next offseason.

If he does, having a quarterback ready to go would be huge. That's why the Rams, along with the Kansas City Chiefs, were linked by ESPN to New Orleans Saints third-year QB Spencer Rattler as a developmental QB trade target.

Rams, Chiefs linked to Saints developmental QB

ESPN predicts that Rattler has a 70% chance of being traded this offseason, with "Potential team fits" of the Miami Dolphins, Chiefs, Rams, and Las Vegas Raiders.

Rattler is coming off a decent season as the Saints starter, as in eight games, he completed 67.7% of his passes for 1,586 yards and eight touchdowns with five interceptions.

Compared to his rookie year, when he had a 57.0% completion rate with 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions, Rattler took a significant step forward in 2025.

Thanks to the Saints finding out Tyler Shough is the future at quarterback, Rattler is a clear trade candidate this offseason.

He's just 25 years old and is under contract for two more seasons, as he was a 2024 fifth-round draft pick. Shough is a top developmental QB trade target this offseason.

For the Rams, who might get just one more season out of Stafford, adding Rattler would make a lot of sense. He could turn into a solid starter after learning for a year behind Stafford and with Sean McVay.

But the Rams won't be the only team eyeing Rattler this offseason. The Dolphins, who need a budget quarterback, could be a great landing spot. And ESPN also linked the Raiders and Chiefs to Rattler.

The Chiefs are some tough competition, as they could target the Saints quarterback with Patrick Mahomes coming off a torn ACL, and the need for a backup QB in general.

While the Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, and other QB-needy teams like the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets might go after Rattler, the Rams are a great fit for the 25-year-old QB.

Getting Rattler to back up Stafford, and potentially take over in 2027, would be a great use of resources this offseason. Even though it might not be cheap, Rattler would be, at worst, good insurance if Stafford ever goes down with an injury.
