Many people have criticized Moreno for these comments and even asked to view the survey results. Angels players also reportedly “took notice” of Moreno’s comments about winning not being a priority.

Former Angels outfielder Kevin Pillar made his stance on the issue clear: Moreno needs to sell the team.

Pillar signed with the Angels in April 2024 and played 83 games with the Halos that season. He also played the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite missing the majority of the season with a left shoulder fracture.

Pillar Says Being Based in Southern California Should Attract More Players to the Angels

In a recent interview with Foul Territory, Pillar explained that playing in Southern California, specifically in Orange County where the Angels are based, was one of the best places he played during his career.

Pillar played all over the United States and even started his career in Canada with the Toronto Blue Jays. He made MLB appearances with East Coast teams like the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox along with other teams like the Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers.

“I got a chance to play there, and it is arguably one of the best places to play in baseball, Southern California, Orange County, the weather is beautiful, the fans are passionate,” Pillar said in the interview.

“He (Arte Moreno) doesn’t realize what he has. Because if he really cared about winning, it would be such a destination for players to want to come and play,” Pillar added. “It’s just a matter of time. He just needs to get rid of the team, because he really doesn’t care about the Angels.”

Moreno purchased the Angels from the Walt Disney Company in 2003 for $184 million. The Halos have made the postseason six times since then but have not appeared in the playoffs since 2014.

Moreno initiated the process of selling the team in August 2022. However, he ultimately decided to keep the franchise and abruptly stopped the process in January 2023.
