Prime Minister Mark Carney’s long-awaited sit-down with Indian PM Narendra Modi will kick off this week.

In an announcement issued Monday by the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney will depart on the nine-day visit this coming Thursday, with India as the first stop.

The visit will mark a big step in renewing relations with India after years of tense relations between the two nations — thanks largely to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public accusations in the House of Commons that the government of India played a role in the June 2023 assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the parking lot of a B.C. gurdwara.

Carney, Modi shook hands at G7 summit

India vehemently rejected these accusations, sparking a protracted spat that prompted both nations to expel diplomats , close consulates, and end ongoing trade talks.

Those tensions began to relax last year  after Carney and Modi met on the margins of last summer’s G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Modi attended the summit at Carney’s invitation.

That was enough for both nations to begin repairing the diplomatic rifts, and culminated in Modi offering Carney a formal invitation to visit him in Delhi.

The PMO pitched the trip as a means to “unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses” through trade, energy, technology, and defence.

“Through these visits to three of Canada’s strongest Indo-Pacific partners, the Prime Minister will deepen regional ties that are critical to our security and prosperity,” the statement continued.

Visit will encourage trade, investment

Carney’s visit with Modi, the PMO says, will “focus on elevating and expanding the Canada-India relationship, with ambitious new partnerships in trade, energy, technology and artificial intelligence (AI), talent and culture, and defence.”

Carney is also set to meet with business leaders to create business and investment partnerships.

Carney will depart India for Australia, where he will meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to “deepen cooperation on defence and maritime security, critical minerals, trade, and advanced technologies, including AI,” as well as address to both houses of Australia’s parliament.

The PM’s also set to meet Japanese PM Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo to “strengthen mutual investment and partnerships in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals, and food security.”
