Fresh Faces on the Forty: Freshman OL John Turntine III

· Yahoo Sports

“Fresh Faces on the Forty” marches on, this time it’s all about John Turntine. The freshman OT comes in as a top 25 player in the state of Texas and enters a room where opportunity is plentiful. The concern on the offensive line is depth and the versatility Turntine brings to the table could give him a chance to break through. He comes in at just 270 lbs, so he needs to add weight but his athleticism and movement is elite and he has the frame to continue to grow.

Turntine played his high school football at North Crowley in Fort Worth and has been a top OT prospect for many years. He now finds his way to Austin and there is a massive opening on the interior. It would require adding some weight, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Turntine found his way to being the 6th OL for Sarkisian in 2026. It’ll take some time but I wouldn’t be shocked if he was the surprise of spring camp.

Now, while it would be nice if Turntine popped and became a true option in 2026, the plans for him go well beyond this season. Trevor Goosby is out the door after 2026 and it seems more likely Brandon Baker might find a home at guard moving forward. That could leave the RT competition between Turntine and Jaydon Chatman, with Melvin Siani taking over at LT.

Turntine is something of a project and could take time but he comes in with elite footwork and athleticism. He could very well factor into the interior in the coming years but I believe he has the makings of another great Longhorns OT. To me, Turntine is the favorite to be starting across from Melvin Siani in 2027. I believe he’ll surprise this season and become a household name around Longhorn Nation quickly.

Turntine falls into the group that has a long-term plan that I could see being sped up considering his ability. I put Samari Matthews in this group as well and we will get into him tomorrow. The North Carolina product comes in with a decorated high school career and elite ball skills. We’ll talk about why he could surprise some fans in 2026 tomorrow.
