Perhaps a telling of how the offseason could play out, Lu Dort decided to prepare himself for the upcoming fork in the road he'll face in six months. He recently signed with Klutch Sports Group as his NBA agency.
Of course, Klutch Sports Group is the most notorious agency in the league. Rich Paul created the industry giant. Some notable clients include LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Draymond Green.
The NBA agency is known for getting its clients the bag. Which segues to why Dort likely made the move.
Dort has an $18.2 million team option for the 2026-27 season. That said, the Thunder rarely enter the final year of someone's contract if they're interested in keeping them around. He was eligible for a contract extension this past summer. The fact that nothing happened spoke pretty loudly of what the Thunder think of their long-term future together.
Starting next season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams will balloon OKC's payroll for the foreseeable future as all signed recent contract extensions. That puts the Thunder in a spot where they'll likely need to shake up their roster.
Dort has been one of the names mentioned. Isaiah Hartenstein is another, as he has a $28.5 million team option for the 2026-27 season. Cason Wallace will also be eligible for a contract extension this upcoming summer.
Considering Wallace's ascension, it likely makes the most sense to graduate him as a full-time starter next season with a new deal. He'd be a seamless replacement for Dort, who is in his sixth season in OKC.
Dort talked to Suave Report's Addam Francisco on why he made the change with an important offseason coming up.
"It was more opportunities. A lot of the stuff that I was looking for as a 19-year-old is different from the stuff I'm looking for now," Dort said. "I'm super grateful for what Wasserman what did for me. I love them to death and they did an amazing job with me. Now, I'm just looking for opportunities."
While nothing explicit was said, you can probably read between the lines what Dort meant by that. The 26-year-old has been one of OKC's best development stories ever. Going from an undrafted rookie to a one-time NBA champion who's widely viewed as one of the best perimeter defenders.
Dort will be represented by Klutch Sports' Mike George. The NBA agent has several Canadian clients such as Jamal Murray, Dillon Brooks and Shaedon Sharpe.
"The agent I signed with, I've known him for a long time. He's Canadian. We've always had that connection for a long time," Dort said. "A lot of stuff that agency brings is really dope. There's so much I can go about. I'm just happy with my decision."
I guess we'll see how the offseason shakes out. But that's a bridge both the Thunder and Dort will cross when they get there. For now, the reigning NBA champions hope to go back-to-back with the same roster that dominated the league last year.
Got a chance to chat privately with Lu Dort last night and asked him a few questions about joining Klutch Sports.
